Read the guideFamilies deserve clarity, not promises. Researchers are studying cell-based approaches, but a biological theory or a family’s experience does not establish that a treatment works.
Stem-cell therapy for autism remains investigational. Benefits are uncertain, outcomes cannot be guaranteed, and long-term safety evidence is limited. The US FDA states that regenerative medicine therapies have not been approved to treat autism. Approval and research oversight must be checked in the country where a procedure is offered. Studies have investigated cord blood and mesenchymal stromal cells (often called MSCs), including cells from donated umbilical cord tissue. Proposed effects involve immune signaling; they do not demonstrate that cells replace brain cells or reliably improve everyday life.
Products, doses, and delivery methods differ. Intravenous infusion, more invasive intrathecal procedures, and cell-free or nasal products are not interchangeable. Evidence for one does not establish safety or suitability for another.
Small studies have reported mixed findings. Controlled studies have not shown consistent benefit across participants and outcomes. Infusion reactions, infection, and other complications are possible; limited follow-up leaves long-term risks uncertain.
